Past midnight on a rainy summer Monday, and the subway car was three-quarters full. His voice, bright and insistent, carried well.
“College is a scam to steal yah money!”
Breath. Spit.
“College! Is a Scam! To! Steal! Yah! Money!”
Breath. Spit.
One woman tried to act cool as she covertly filmed it from a corner seat. The Jamaican in front of her couldn’t stop laughing (I love New York, man. Man, do I love New York!) His friend tried to shut him up. Everyone else pretended to ignore it. Not that you could. His voice, insistently bright, carried well.
Feels like you have a wee little chap book emerging here, Erin Snapshots of your travels across the country on a train. Observations that are funny, interesting….my bet is that you have quite a few more. Glad you are writing.
I just read Annie Dillard’s essay on the total eclipse she experienced in 1979. Her writing reminded me a bit of yours. Keen observation and the telling.
Can hardly wait until your next post.
