#28

Past midnight on a rainy summer Monday, and the subway car was three-quarters full. His voice, bright and insistent, carried well.

“College is a scam to steal yah money!”
Breath. Spit.
“College! Is a Scam! To! Steal! Yah! Money!”
Breath. Spit.

One woman tried to act cool as she covertly filmed it from a corner seat. The Jamaican in front of her couldn’t stop laughing (I love New York, man. Man, do I love New York!) His friend tried to shut him up. Everyone else pretended to ignore it. Not that you could. His voice, insistently bright, carried well.

  1. Feels like you have a wee little chap book emerging here, Erin Snapshots of your travels across the country on a train. Observations that are funny, interesting….my bet is that you have quite a few more. Glad you are writing.

I just read Annie Dillard’s essay on the total eclipse she experienced in 1979. Her writing reminded me a bit of yours. Keen observation and the telling.

Can hardly wait until your next post.
